An interactive illuminated mobile sculpture — a reflection on the fragile balance of utopia, shown at the London Design Biennale 2016.
LeveL is an interactive illuminated mobile sculpture, made in collaboration with mischer'traxler Studio. When the installation is at rest, the LEDs glow at maximum brightness. As visitors move through the space, the air currents they create cause the mobile's rods to tilt — and as they tilt, the lights dim accordingly. The whole thing balances on the edge of disturbance.
DKIA developed the electronics and control firmware. Each illuminated end of the mobile houses a small circuit board carrying six high-power LEDs, an accelerometer, and a microcontroller. The accelerometers detect minimal movement and feed the lighting response in real time. Communication between boards runs mechanically through the structure itself rather than by cable. We also developed a firmware update method that works via the power cables alone — making it safe to update and calibrate on-site without additional connections.
